Laura Holmes is an interior designer and property developer, writing on her blog Little Miss Homes based in South-West London. Laura is a former journalist and celebrity publicist, but in 2008 finally jumped into her family property development business and hasn’t looked back since. She inherited her passion for properties from her parents and now fully appreciates the importance of celebrating the originality of your surroundings, which she constantly does living in London. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I would say fresh, clean and calm – I love to use soft colours and keep schemes simple. I then add splashes of colour with accessories, which are much easier to update if you get bored!
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I ask the client their likes and dislikes and look at images with them. I then use sites such as Pinterest to create a mood board. Once that’s in place I have a pretty clear vision of what I’m going to create!
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I haven’t worked with him yet, but hope to in the future; an architect called Ben Pentreath. I adore his designs – he works in a very traditional style creating beautiful modern buildings, but in period designs – I also love his interior design – a very different style to my own, which makes me admire it all the more.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Magazines are great and not just interiors, I often find inspiration in Vogue – one powerful image will start me on a creative journey. I love to browse shops too – Designers Guild and Jonathan Adler are two of my favourites.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
I started in a very different career – I was a celebrity publicity for a number of years before moving into property and interiors totally by chance. My advice would be to follow your heart and instinct – if something feels right then keep working for it. Nothing feels better than calling something you love work!
