Laurel Sprigg is the founder of her own design studio, dedicated to creating custom finely sewn soft furnishings based in San Francisco. Laurel creates furnishings primarily for the interior design trade, crafting high quality products manufactured using premium workmanship. She has an extensive level of experience creating beautiful textile designs and treatments both in contemporary and architecturally historic settings. She has also worked on commercial and residential projects too. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Laurel Sprigg.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My creative aesthetic is summed up in the quote that who works with their hands, head and heart is an artist. I love the challenge of creating custom soft furnishings, and of making these things as finely as possible.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I look carefully at the architecture involved, and the uses of the rooms. I make recommendations of fabrics and details that complement the interior designer’s overall plan. We then provide estimates and sketches for approval.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
A creative person I admire very much is the late Sherrie Horner, a master curtain maker who had a curtain making business in England, and then Portugal, before coming to San Francisco. We shared a love of architecture, history, art, textiles, and beautiful sewing. I learned about English curtain making techniques from her. Sherrie was brilliant, adventurous and hard-working.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
So many things inspire me, but I think the two things that influence me the most are Nature, and historical textiles. Nature is full of patterns, with shapes and proportions that always manage to balance. I am also constantly in awe of the beautiful textiles that have been made all over the world throughout history.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Through 25 years of owning a fine sewing business, I remain fascinated by each unique home and project. Maintaining a standard of excellence for our work, and good business practices has made my business a successful one. My advice to those who might want to do this kind of work, stay curious and open, learn as much as you can, not only about sewing, but all related fields.
