Eleanor Young is the founder of Fun Makes Good, a bespoke upholstery service turning unloved furniture into unique pieces inspired by architectural forms and geometric shapes. Eleanor combines embroidery techniques with bold patterns and creative colour combinations to create a stunning range of furnishings for the home. She graduated from the world-renowned Glasgow School of Art in 2007, receiving a First Class Honours degree in Embroidered Textiles. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
Our designs are inspired by contemporary architectural forms and geometric shapes and combine a love of pattern, texture and colour to produce a striking range of interior products and bespoke client commissions.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Colour is often our starting point or if for a client a specific brief, we then sketch ideas in pencil or sometimes paper collage before working up into a large scale design.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I really enjoy working collaboratively and have had some wonderful experiences with my private clients, designing bespoke upholstery. Often they are the most enthusiastic about an idea and they see no limits to a design. Their enthusiasm for the project has allowed me to experiment with new techniques or colour combinations which is very freeing and has provided a platform to try new ideas often with results in unexpected new directions.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I like going to galleries and exhibitions and often find inspiration for colour and composition in art. I also like taking a walk in the countryside to see natural colours.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Always challenge yourself, but do something you love, be passionate and stay motivated and if you aren’t go out and look for ways to re-motivate yourself.
