1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
Good-Humoured, Authentic, Kind, In Love with the Perfect Word. I’ve got that cool-big-sister-you-want -to-have-margaritas-with thing, so my style is pretty down to earth. I love folk art, needlepoint and paint-by-numbers.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Usually I just dive right in. Some ideas need to stay in the rock tumbler longer than I’d like, but I’m getting better at being patient and trusting in divine timing.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I’ve loved collaborating with Phil Swann – he’s a composer and a novelist and we wrote a musical together. He likes to pretend he’s an old grump, but like most grumps, he’s a big softy on the inside. He is also endlessly curious about the world, so he asks great questions. He is almost completely self-taught, and his delight in the creative process makes work fun.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Beach walk. You almost can’t NOT have a great idea on a beach walk. And I’ll make another plug for paint-by-numbers; I find them deeply relaxing.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Some combination of stubbornness, faith and happy accidents. Plus, I really enjoy working. Even the boring computer stuff I find fun. Best advice: study marketing. Not only is it a fascinating insight into human behaviour, but the true magic of marketing is in the discipline of great storytelling.
