Bedding Sets & Duvet Covers: FAQs

What Is the Best Bedding to Buy?

While there is endless variety in the different types of bedding you can purchase, cotton is widely regarded as the best and most popular choice for everyday use. This is because cotton bedding offers users softness and breathability, while also providing natural moisture-wicking properties, which allow you to stay cool and dry during evenings with a higher temperature.

For those wanting a more luxurious experience, Egyptian cotton bedding is usually the best option. This offers a higher thread count for a softer and silkier feel and exceptional durability. There are also naturally breathable fibres in the material, so you can stay comfortable regardless of the season!

Finally, for those wanting low-maintenance and easy to clean bedding, polycotton blends and linen are remarkably easy to care for while maintaining vibrancy.

What Thread Count Is Best for Bedding?

The higher the thread count, the softer and more durable your bedding, which means a high thread count lends to better bedding!

Generally, you’ll find a thread count of 200 and above is a great option for soft, breathable and affordable bedding. For something a tad more luxurious, you’ll want to select bedding with a thread count of over 400, which will lend to an ultra-soft, durable and luxurious bedding set.

For those wanting a premium option, bedding with a 600+ thread count, such as Egyptian cotton is the perfect choice.

What Should I Look for When Buying Bed Sheets?

When selecting bed sheets, you should consider the thread count and material of your sheets. This means you’ll likely want a minimum of 200 thread count to ensure softness, with cotton, linen or silk the material of choice.

You might also want to consider if your bedding is machine washable for convenience. Some materials, such as silk, might have their longevity impacted by washing machine use, while natural fibres can last longer and become softer with each wash.

Finally, you might want to consider the colour and design of your bedding, and how this can complement your bedroom décor for a cohesive look.

What Makes a Good Duvet?

To find a good duvet, you’ll need to consider several factors. The first of these is the tog rating, making sure to suit a tog for your needs and the relevant season.

You might also want to consider the filling type, with natural fillings such as feather, down and wool breathable and long lasting, while synthetic fillings are regarded for being hypoallergenic, easy to care for and affordable.

Finally, the material of your duvet is important, with cotton and silk covers popular for their breathability and softness.

How to Wash a Duvet?

To keep your duvet in its best fresh and hygienic condition, you should always start by checking the care label. Most duvets are machine washable, but some of them may require professional cleaning, especially if they’re made of more delicate materials. You might also need to ensure your duvet fits into your washing machine, with king size or thicker duvets potentially requiring cleaning in an industrial sized machine.

If your duvet fits, make sure to wash it on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent at 30-40°C, before rinsing thoroughly to remove any detergent residue.

Finally, you should dry your duvet completely, as this will help to prevent the inside from clumping in addition to causing mould to spread. This can be done by air drying the duvet or tumble drying it on a low heat.

For best results, wash your duvet every 6 months to maintain freshness.

What Tog Duvet is Best Year-Round?

For colder months, a higher tog duvet is key for staying warm! While a 10.5 tog is a good all-year-round option, a 12 tog duvet will keep you warm and cosy in the winter, while a 13.5 tog is perfect for colder homes or extreme weather events. If needed, you can also pair your duvet with a lightweight throw or bedspread.

For warmer months, you should opt for a lightweight duvet. While a 10.5 tog is suitable all year round, a 7.5 tog is perfect for mild summer evenings, while a 4.5 tog will suit hot sleepers, especially on warm nights.

You can also pair your summer duvet with breathable cotton or linen bedding for cooler, more comfortable sleep.

How to Put a Duvet Cover On?

If you’re struggling with changing your duvet cover, you should try the roll-and-flip method.

This entails turning the duvet cover inside out, before laying it flat on the bed. Next, place the duvet on top, aligning all the corners of the duvet with the cover. Starting at the ‘closed’ end, you should roll the duvet on the cover like a burrito, before flipping the open end of the cover over the roll and pulling it through.

Next, unroll, shake and fluff the cover - your duvet should be perfectly encased inside, saving both time and effort!

How Often Should You Wash Your Bedding?

For a clean and healthy sleeping environment, you should wash your duvet covers and pillowcases once a week to remove sweat, oils and bacteria. Alternatively, bed sheets should be washed once a week, or every two weeks at most. Finally, duvets and pillows should be washed every six months.

To expand the lifespan of your bedding, you could also use pillow protectors or mattress covers.

Can You Tumble Dry a Duvet?

Before you tumble dry a duvet, you should check the care label, as some duvets should only be air dried. In addition, always make sure to use a low heat setting, as this will prevent damage to the filling inside.

To help fluff and evenly distribute the filling, you can add dryer balls or clean tennis balls, always making sure the duvet is completely dry to prevent mould or mildew.

For natural-fibre duvets (e.g., feather or down), professional drying may be the best option

How Often Should You Change Your Bedding?

Pillowcases and sheets should be changed once a week for ultimate hygiene and freshness, while duvet covers should be changed every one to two weeks. Meanwhile, you should replace your pillows every 1-2 years, while duvets should be replaced every five years.
