Curtain Poles and Tracks: FAQs

Which is better – curtain track or pole?

Essentially both are used for the same reason. However, there are certain curtain styles which sit better with one or the other. Poles are more noticeable. Therefore, they are more decorative by nature, as they contribute to the overall look. Tracks on the other hand are designed to be purely practical. But they offer less variety and typically only come in white. If you prefer the hanging approach to remain out of sight, curtain tracks are more suitable.

We also have two buying guides for both tracks and poles to further inform your decision.

What type of curtains go on tracks?

Curtains with header tape are best fitted with tracks. If they are plastic, they will be able to hold light to medium weight curtains. However, if your curtains are on the heavier side, metal tracks offer better support.

We have a range of refined and modern curtain tracks in many colours, materials and sizes. Having problems with certain parts of your track? Don’t worry - we also supply track spares to save you having to buy a whole new one.

How do I choose a curtain pole?

The type of pole you pick depends on your window and the type of curtains it can support. However, four key things should be considered – material, functionality, diameter and budget.

The material choice ultimately rests on what look you want to achieve. To narrow your search, you need to determine whether the pole will be strong enough to hold your curtains. You also need to ask yourself whether the pricing agrees with your budget. For bay windows, glass walls, patio doors or corner windows, they can be made-to-measure for an accurate fit.

If you need a little more information – check out our curtain pole buying guide.

What are curtains on a rail called?

A rail is just another term for pole. Typically, Pencil Pleat is the standard heading for curtains. It consists of three rows of thread looped through it - to fit all types of poles. Eyelet curtains are specifically made for use with curtain rails. They offer modernity with their soft folds. Pinch Pleat curtains are a more decorative style. However, it is more gathered than other curtains, as it has pleats hemmed in for a deluxe look.
