Curtain fabric gives you the freedom to create whatever curtains or blinds you please – and you can even create other soft furnishings such as cushions to match! There are a range of different types of curtain fabric, from silk and damask to chenille and suede. Each of the different types of curtain fabric can be used in different ways and can serve different purposes. Curtain fabric is typically used for making your own curtains however the high-quality fabrics can also be used to create a range of different soft furnishings. There is no best curtain fabric for curtains as it will depend on a number of things such as personal preference, window position, intended use and interior design.
Curtain fabric is not only for use in making your own curtains, you can actually use it for a number of applications such as making cushions and seat covers. Generally, if you are planning to use curtain fabric for cushions or seat covers the best type of fabric would be upholstery fabric but there is nothing to stop you using whichever fabric you prefer. You can use curtain fabric to make your own curtains, curtain ties, cushion covers, seat covers and really whatever you set your mind to. Making your own curtains using curtain fabric is pretty simple if you have the use of a sewing machine; all you will need in addition to your curtain fabric is some interlining fabric, heading tape, fabric scissors, a sewing machine and a measuring tape.
Generally, the curtain fabric which is best suited to keeping a room warm is any which is dense and heavy as these tend to be more insulating than thinner fabrics such as chenille or voile. However, the best thing you can do with your curtains to ensure they insulate the room is to add a good quality interlining fabric. Curtain lining fabric and interlining not only help to protect your curtain fabric from harmful sunlight which can fade the fabric but also helps to add some heat retention for your rooms. Interlining helps to insulate you room that little bit more which actually gives you more flexibility in the curtain fabric you choose; knowing you can increase heat retention by adding interlining.
The most practical curtain fabric for you will depend on a number of things. First of all it will depend on the room you plan to use the curtains in, for example if you plan to use the fabric in bedrooms you would consider the most practical fabric to be blackout curtain fabric as this helps give you maximum light control for brighter nights and mornings. Alternatively, in a kitchen you may prefer to have light shining through, therefore voile curtain fabric could be the best option for you or if you think you may need to wipe down the curtains often, PVC fabric could be the most practical. If you are planning to use your curtain fabric for another application, upholstery fabric would likely be the most practical option for you; especially if you are making seat coverings or cushions.
