Christie Jones is a calligrapher, with her own business and design blog bedsidesign, based in New York. Christie started her blog in 2011, as a means to explore creative outlets such as photography and interior design. In 2013 this then led to training in copperplate calligraphy and ultimately her business. Her first freelance project only six weeks later then cemented her career as a professional calligrapher. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Christie Jones.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I call myself a thrifted-minimalist. I believe that you can create a room with a lot of personality with vintage or thrifted items but with the right edits so it doesn’t look over the top. I love mid-century furniture so I usually gravitate towards that era. In the same way I take an old craft of calligraphy and turn it modern with a lot of restraint. I’m not one for overly flourished letters. I keep it simple, and I think it works better that way for me.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I provide custom calligraphy for all sorts of reasons - tattoos, logos, weddings. I typically ask a bunch of questions to make sure that I have a clear idea of what my client wants, and then I let my mind (and hand) wander.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I don’t think I can pick just one. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to collaborate and create designs for a variety of creatives. Each one has their own story, and I so admire what makes them push forward, why they started, and what obstacles they’ve worked through to get where they are now.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I typically turn some music on, pull out a notebook and sketch out some ideas. I try not to turn to the computer for inspiration. In fact, I prefer to unplug. Get outside, breathe in some fresh air, and then I’m on my way!
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Almost three years ago I decided to turn my bedside notebook into a public blog. I started doing instead of thinking about it. I’ll admit I didn’t really know what I was doing but I started. A year and a half ago I took an online calligraphy class and fell in love. I dedicated all my free time to practicing and I wasn’t afraid to share my journey with others. When I launched my business in December 2013 I invited those who followed me to continue to follow me on this new endeavor. My first few clients were some of my first blog readers. My advice is to start. Stop thinking about it and just do it.
