Heather Helms brings over 10 years of professional experience as an interior designer to Schaub & Srote. She collaborates with architect teams during interior planning, in addition to leading individual interior design projects, from initiation through to completion; managing the design project and mediating client expectations and deliverables. Heather’s forte is listening closely to her clients and learning about their wants and needs and clearly articulating those design goals to the corresponding project team or for procurement of furnishings and art. So we are proud to bring you the designer insights of Heather Helms.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My designs are classic with a modern twist. I lean toward upholstered pieces with clean lines in neutral tones to anchor the room. I layer in colour, texture and personality though artwork, accessories and textiles.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
My process always begins by addressing the functional needs of the space. I then focus on sourcing items that reflect my clients’ lifestyle and design aesthetic.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I really have a great amount of respect and admiration for the artisans that make my designs a reality. They take so much pride in what they do. Many of them are third or fourth generations preserving their families heritage. Their passion for what they do shines through in their craftsmanship and is so inspiring.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
It really depends on the project. It could be a visit to a local museum or gallery, or a walk in the woods. Regardless of where I am looking for inspiration, I always disconnect from technology and really focus on being present in the moment. Inspiration is all around us. I think we are just too busy to recognize it most of the time.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Do something you are passionate about. Know who you are as a person and make sure that is represented in your work every day. Focus on building and nurturing relationships and never stop learning and growing personally and professionally.
