Heather Peterson is the founder of Girl Charlee Fabrics UK & Europe, which she originally established in the US in 2004. She originally sold a range of childrens clothing but this soon blossomed into an exclusive range of vintage fabrics, knit fabrics and modern designs. Accompanied by her friends and family, Girl Charlee Fabrics really is a family business. Her expert team only source knit fabrics that are soft, have the right stretch and are not prints you have seen anywhere else. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Heather Peterson.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
Our fabric designs are clean and fresh, with a modern aesthetic that appeals to a wide audience. From basics to trendy and classic styles, we cover all tastes with our exclusive Girl Charlee Collection fabrics.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
We take inspiration from what is showing on the catwalk to what is currently trending, in order to design our unique patterns. Colour palette and clean lines are very important to us.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
We respect our screen printers who bring our designs to life on the fabric. It’s an art form which is often undervalued, but if it’s not done well, the fabric isn’t perfect. Fortunately we work with the best in the industry so our printed fabrics match our original vision and high standards.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Inspiration comes from everywhere. We are constantly taking pictures and scribbling ideas down. When inspiration comes you have to grab it with both hands, no matter where you are or what you are doing.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
A passion for high quality fabrics and unique designs is what started it all, followed by a lot of hard work, focus and dedication. Our advice would be to do something you love, give it your all, then others will see your passion and hard work reflected in your designs/products.
