1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My work, whether it’s logos or surface design, tends toward simple, bold, crisp shapes, often with a retro bent.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I learn everything I can from the client—their goals, preferences, and project context. I develop several design solutions, refine the best one(s), and then they’re off to the printer.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I’ve always respected, learned from, and enjoyed working with a Chicago marketing expert named Jim Moran. He says the first rule of design is legibility and the second is restraint, which I have tried to take to heart.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I gather relevant visual examples—photographs, typography samples, old ads or packaging, color swatches, you name it. Just looking at shapes and forms gets ideas percolating.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
I’m a one-person studio and love working on my own now, but couldn’t have reached this point without experience as an employee at other companies. That plus an education in design is my advice to others. However, there are lots of paths; if something different is working for you, keep going!
