Lesley is originally from Canada but now works from California, crafting beautiful things amazing spaces. She has an innate passion for design, art and graphic design. She curates an Etsy shop, whilst conquering freelance art and design projects. Lesley has also worked on these interiors (right, right-below) for 55downingstreet.com and lampsplus.com. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I love to layer color, texture, and pattern in unexpected (but delightfully livable) ways. Personality is essential to good design, and I believe beauty and inspiration just make life better.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
My primary craft is interior photo styling, and there are many people to please with the final design. I typically seek out a strong inspiration image as a jumping-off point.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I was fortunate to spend a few months freelancing for Betsy Burnham of Burnham Design. She’s someone I genuinely admire, and it was a privilege to work with her firm and glean wisdom from her. Not only is she incredibly talented and diligent with a unique aesthetic, she’s just a genuinely nice person – and that combination is hard to come by in the design world.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I’ve learned that the most important thing is just to show up. Browse Pinterest. Grab a magazine. Visit stores. Just start somewhere. The ideas and inspiration will come.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
There’s definitely a perceived glamour of being fully self-employed, but what works best for me is balancing a full-time job (I’m an Interior Design Stylist for Lamps Plus) with a freelance design career. My advice is to do what works for you!
