Magnus Riise is a freelance illustrator, graphic designer and surface pattern designer, working from his own studio in Oslo, Norway. Magnus loves to translate his creative ideas and thoughts into vibrant and eye-catching designs. His individual style is a combination of colour, fun, sophistication and a touch of the retro. Magnus also has a BA in visual communication from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design in Norway, and the Kolding School of Design, in Denmark. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My work always have some common elements. It’s usually colourful, fun and sophisticated, and sometimes with a retro feel. Those are the ingredients that tie it all together, but the end result can vary a lot.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Research and gathering information. I also use my sketchbook a lot, but I tend to write more than I actual sketch.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
It's hard to choose just one person, so I have to say my creative friends. Freelancing can be lonely sometimes, so it helps to have friends who can offer advice when needed, and can help me see things in a different way if I'm stuck. It goes both ways of course. It's always nice to have a fresh pair of eyes from someone I know I can trust.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I listen to music, and I use Pinterest a lot too, which is an endless source of inspiration. Also I devour countless cups of licorice tea while skimming through books and magazines.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Lots of hard work and despite all the difficulties I've never given up. As far as I know there isn't any magic tricks to it, so believe in what you do, and have fun along the way. I also had to do things outside of my comfort zone.
