Megan Duesterhaus is a home decor and DIY blogger, writing about her craft projects on her blog The Homes I Have Made, since 2012. Living overseas as a proud military wife, Megan had lots of extra time to relearn how to sew, starting with pillows and more recently baby clothes. Couple this with a love of blogging, and it’s no wonder that she started blogging about all of her projects and journalling her home improvements. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Megan Duesterhaus.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My style is modern, fresh, colorful, preppy and playful. I like strong contrasts, happy patterns, and bold, bright colors all pulled together with a mega-dose of bright white!
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
A project usually starts with the desire to transform one thing into something else. Fabric into a quilt/curtains/bag/pillow; or an old, tired piece of furniture into something fresh and functional.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
This is tough, but I’d have to say Jennifer Jones from I Heart Organizing. She has created a blog, brand and business that is happy, colorful, smart and inspiring. She blogs with class and integrity and maintains such a high standard of design, projects, and photography in her home, on her blog, and in the items she sells. She is genuinely kind and encouraging to work with and is eager and happy to teach, inspire, and lead.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
A fantastic fabric or paper (wallpaper, contact paper, wrapping paper) is usually what gets me excited about a project. Everything from furniture to layout and finishes can all be guided by a great inspiration fabric!
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
My desire to create. Working with my hands and creating beautiful things feeds my soul and makes me who I am. I would create no matter my life circumstances or how much I was getting paid. My advice is to love what you do…do more of the things you love…and work really hard at doing it well.
