Miji Lee is a designer and illustrator originally from South Korea, and now working on her eponymous brand, from Toronto. Miji has always dreamed of working as a designer and artist ever since she was a little girl. She firmly believes that good design can make the world a better and more beautiful place. So wants to make it so, with her own creations. In 2010 Miji also gained a qualification in Illustration in Toronto. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Miji Lee.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I love using water colour mostly, so my general designs are soft, organic and feminine, also sometimes vivid and colourful. My favourite subject is nature, especially anything about botanical themes, they are always absolutely beautiful and inspirational.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
I do lots of trends research and collect inspirational images before I start a new project, then sketch ideas and play around with them. I usually can only get satisfied with a final design after failing and screwing up my sketchbook.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
I admire artisans and craftsmen who have many years of experience in their own fields. I respect the dignity of traditional craftsmanship and honor their dedication and effort. They have valuable and relevant know-how and spent so many years perfecting their skills. It is very attractive that they've been focused on one field and continued developing their high level of skills for a such long time.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I am always reading online art magazines, checking out design blogs and pinning images on Pinterest everyday to read trends or get some inspiration. Sometimes I take a little walk to see nature's beauty. Also when I travel I get some fresh inspiration and motivation from new cities and people.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
I became a designer only because I wanted to be one ever since I was a little girl. I've been always been interested in field of design and art, and just followed my heart. Nothing really special. I think it is crucial that people find what they love and are crazy about, be passionate, and work hard. It sounds cliche, but it’s so true.
