Susanne Kasielke is a German illustrator, artist and surface pattern designs, working from her eponymous studio, from Washington, DC. Susanne creates vintage inspired digital collages, combining multiple techniques and mediums, from realistic drawings to abstract mixed-media paintings. She believes that the past plays a significant part in our lives, so she endeavours to use vintage designs that remind customers of important moments in their own lives. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I create digital collages which combine different mediums and techniques (from abstract paintings to realistic pencil drawings). I love to experiment with digital technology to create unexpected texture and depth.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Research is my middle name - It's super important to know what's trending and already out there, before I start sketching ideas with pencil on paper (sketchbook, post-it's, magazine pages).
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
It's incredible how many amazing people I already came across and was fortunate to meet! I'm following a couple of people who are not only crazy talented but also brilliant in their business decisions. I very much admire people, who understand the non-creative side of things and who build up a brand with the work they love to make their creative dream come true.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I usually collect inspiration with my very good friend Pinterest. The variety of interpretations for one topic is incredible and totally replaced my folders of countless paper clippings.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Sounds like I have everything figured out, which is far from the truth! I think key for a creative career are a clear vision for your work, continuous learning, tons of research, and a lot of patience. Creative success doesn't happen overnight, you have to love and embrace the journey.
