1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
I am enthusiastic about white. I believe that white can be used beautifully in every room in one’s home as it is calming, refreshing, energizing, and classic.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
When starting a new project in my own home, I look to my books, magazine tear sheets, and Pinterest boards. I also bounce ideas off of trusted friends, and sometimes “talk” my ideas out on my blog. When planning design projects for others, I ask about the needs and goals for a finished space.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
In the blogging world, I admire the work of many. The Canadian design blogger community has grown rapidly over the last few years, and I continue to be impressed with bloggers’ enthusiasm and commitment to sharing their stories. The Internet is an endless source of inspiration! My own knowledge of design has been a result of countless discussions with my mother. She has taught me to value quality and craftsmanship, to invest in classic pieces of furniture, and to be a careful observer.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
Like many design enthusiasts, travelling is where I find inspiration and energy. I have been fortunate to visit many places around the world, and while I may not always end up buying a tangible souvenir, I never return home empty handed. My notebooks and photo albums are full of ideas!
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
I am certainly passionate about design, but I am not a trained designer. I began my blog – White Cabana – when I was completing my PhD. As a blogger, I am able to share my interest in all things white, connect with others who are passionate about design, and stretch my learning about art, design, travel, technology, and everything in between! As a professor, I spend my days working with university students who are creative, energetic, and keen. I’m sure I learn as much from them as they learn from me!
