Katharina Eisenkoeck is a designer and manufacturer of innovatively designed furniture and sculptures, sharing her products and vision at her own company Ekdesign, based in London. Katharina is heavily influenced by the distinct use of materials and loves reviving ancient techniques to craft unique pieces. She has studied at the Art and Design School Ortwein in Graz, the Technical University in Vienna and also received a bachelors degree at the Central Saint Martins College. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
My style has some sort of sculptural simplicity. Clean lines and natural materials with their soft colour tones are shaped into a functional object.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
It usually starts with a material or technique, I then try to teach myself the technique by experimenting with the material, almost like a curious child that discovers something new.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
This is with no doubt my father, he is an architect and I have worked with him on a few projects in the past. I admire his leader qualities; he is someone who gets things done. He even finds the time to sit down to draw and sketch up his ideas every evening after everybody has left the office. Most designer never learnt to draw like he does.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
The best place for inspiration to me is the V&A, but when I am overloaded with information I leave and go to the countryside where I can breathe and think afresh.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
I believe I created a unique object with Nomadic Light, something nobody has seen before, people were curious and wanted to see more of what I do. If you’re starting out try to be exceptional and more importantly irreplaceable there are enough designers out there who are just as good.
