Matt McConnell is the founder of McConnell Studios, where he creates custom designed elements for residential, commercial and public spaces. Matt’s goal is to enhance the environment in which we all live, work and play. He creates everything from architectural installations, lighting designs and sculptures, and has completed hundreds of commissions. Matt also holds a degree in Architecture and Industrial Design from the N.C. State College of design, as well as having 20 years of experience. 1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?
The vision embedded in my sculptural work is born from a fascination with mathematical systems, and the expression of natural forces through motion and layering.
2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process?
Commissions begin with a conceptual approach affected by the environment and context. Gallery and explorative work often begins with form, element flow, material exploration, and emotional expression.
3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?
Close friend, mentor, and fellow sculptor Heath Satow is likely the most prominent. We have shared a passion for refined exploration that has lasted 20 years, and the dialogue remains full and deep when it comes to the execution of ideas and the life of art. The list of designers and clients I respect and have worked with that embrace true collaboration is long.
4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?
I search imagery, sketch in 3d software, explore language and natural forms, and store events and moments for later use. Geometry in nature is pervasive and hidden.
5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
Say yes. I’ve accepted challenges beyond my range often, in material, form, scale, and style. Believe that you can accomplish what seems impossible.
